What are essential oils?
An ‘essential oil’ (often shortened to ‘EO’) is the concentrated essence of a plant. This essence is extracted from different plant parts: roots, seeds, trunks, leaves, fruits and flowers.
When comparing the vast range and characteristics of plant species — for example, between ginger and chamomile, or cedar and lavender — it becomes logical that extraction points vary from plant to plant. These pure essences are commonly and scientifically referred to as essential oils.
Pure oils that are collected through extraction provide potent aid for a wide range of conditions, such as headaches, low mood, sleeplessness, and stress. Across all Rascal Remedies formulations, we use pure plant EOs that provide maximum benefits.
Where do Rascal Remedies Essential Oils come from?
Since plant species (and their varieties) naturally originate from different places, our EOs are sourced from all over the world. Our many sourcing locations include France, Italy, Australia and Hungary — and we’re mindful of seasonality and harvesting. After carefully sourcing our EOs, we blend them in Canada.
How do you ensure the quality of your product ingredients?
Transparent data and trust-based relationships are two important ways that we ensure quality control. We exclusively use %100 percent pure essential oils, obtained from the world’s highest-quality sources. During many years, our team has cultivated strong, long-term relationships with each of our suppliers.
For each ingredient, we require detailed reports and confirmed data from our partners. Rascal Remedies’ trusted partners have been carefully selected over our decade of work in highly-regarded natural wellness companies.
Do any of your Essential Oils come from Canada?
Blending is done locally (in Vancouver, BC, Canada), but based on botanical geography, we need to sources from our trusted partners all over the world. Many EOs are extracted from plants that grow in dry, desert areas and subtropical/tropical regions. If you’re interested in learning more about this topic, you could explore phytogeography, which focuses on where plants are distributed in the world, and how they influence the earth.
How are your Essential Oils produced?
Rascal Remedies essential oils are produced through finely-developed and plant-specific extraction methods. They vary from plant to plant, but the most common extraction method is steam distillation. Compared to other methods, this process draws out essential oils at slightly higher temperatures and pressures, persevering as much of the plant integrity as possible.
How can we use/apply essential oils?
Essential oils can be inhaled or topically applied. Breathing in, or inhaling, essential oils is a good option for those who want to relax, concentrate, or relieve stress. That’s because EO inhalation sends an instant message to the limbic system (also known as the paleomammalian cortex). The limbic system is complex and made up of brain structures that support important functions: emotions, behaviour, mood, memory and much more!
Topical use means direct application onto the skin. Our skin is incredibly dynamic, partly because it’s a very absorbent organ. Using oils topically allows them to travel through the skin’s hair follicles, pores and sweat glands. After the oils are absorbed, they reach your circulatory system. Essential oils will join other travellers and with every heartbeat, move throughout your body. Topical application is ideal for gently soothing skin concerns, like irritating dryness.
What is the best Essential Oil concentration in a children’s blend?
Every essential oil (EO) is made up of over 100+ naturally-occurring, chemical compounds. Depending on its specific composition, each EO has a different concentration that is considered safe for children.
That’s why the recommended ingredient percentage in a formula varies. For example, one oil is considered safe, even when used in a 100% concentration. Another oil may need to be diluted down to 0.5% of a Rascal Remedies blend, for the safety of a 3-6 year old child.
What are the best places to apply EO rollers on children?
Application is specific to every rascal’s needs, and the desired EO benefits. Please review our detailed product descriptions because each one has particular application instructions.
My rascal sprayed Genie Germz into their mouth. What should I do?
The Genie Germz spray is only for external use, so if your child is showing any signs of discomfort, or, if you have any concerns — please contact your healthcare practitioner and/or local health line.
Do you make a headache remedy for kids?
We are constantly working on new potions and we’re grateful and welcoming of your suggestions. While we don’t have a specific product for headaches, we recommend trying our Spike Sniffles roller. It contains essential oils that are known to support breathing comfort. This roller formula is designed to soothe a common cause of small rascals’ headaches: cold/flu related sinus pressure.
Why are your mists in plastic bottles?
Each mist dispenser is in a recyclable plastic bottle that is compatible with essential oils. We also use these bottles to eliminate breakage during shipment, and to minimize shipping weight.
I thought EOs shouldn’t be exposed to light. Why aren’t your rollers brown?
It’s true that EOs are best stored at room temperature, in a dry place, away from direct/strong light. The reason brown dispensers are commonly used is because they do protect photosensitive ingredients, and they are easily sourced.
As a modern brand, we splurged on frosted glass containers. Importantly, frosted glass diffuses light. Our high-coverage opaque labels provide an additional protective layer to Rascal Remedies rollers.
